Project Manager Resume Storytelling Example

Without Storytelling

What was the problem and what were the challenges?

The company was struggling to retain customers because there were so many different views of the same customer. For example, if they came into the store, they were one person and if they shopped online, they were a different customers. Effectively upselling and cross selling was very difficult especially for a company that prided itself on its customer relationships.

The CEO had gone to an executive conference and came back convinced that we needed to improve our predictive capabilities. Before we could do that, however, we needed to implement a Master Data Management solution so we could better manage our data.

A challenge was the time and resources, we had 3 months and had to do the upgrade in 3 environments (Dev, UAT and Prod).  We struggled to support a GDPR audit because data quality was poor.

What did you do?

I was assigned to manage the implementation of a new MDM tool. I was doing the data governance program and so this additional responsibility was assigned to me. I prepared a plan to do the assessment of the current landscape and got all the documents of the source(s), targets, integrations, and API details. I asked the CoE to provide the upgrade detail plan with runbook and planned for the parallel upgrade of the dev and UAT instances. This was verified and certified by the CoE and then later by the client team. The plan will have alignment with various teams like source, target application owners, client testing team and client integration team.

I delivered the program within the timeframe and got appreciation from the client.

What was produced and delivered?

Concurrently during the implementation, I worked with the GDPR compliance team to get us ready for an audit and with the data quality team to make significant data quality improvements. I worked with the Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) to identify PII information and developed a data classification process to support GDPR process. I provided ongoing advocacy that keep these issues front and center within the organization.

What went wrong and how was it handled?

I originally tried to run the project with just two junior resources, but that soon proved to be impossible.  I advocated for additional resources with the MDM CoE (Center of Excellence) which I received.

Revised Version With Storytelling

For complex work efforts, such as an MDM initiative, I use this format because you can include a lot of information in this easy-to-read presentation style. This information can also be easily condensed to Client, Job Role, MDM Initiative, Challenges, and Results.

Client: A High-End Clothing Retailer

Job Role: Project Manager

MDM Initiative: Led delivery of an analytical Master Data Management (MDM) solution that served as the foundation for a fully integrated customer view across all purchase channels. Strongly advocated for data privacy and data quality improvements.

Challenges: A non-integrated customer view, no process ownership, no control measures to support a GDPR audit process, and persistent data quality problems.

Results: Created and led a core technology team in the on-time delivery and support of the MDM solution, which was fully compliant with GDPR regulations. Delivered to a very satisfied client which led to other work.

  • Worked closely with the Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) to identify PII information and developed a data classification process to support the GDPR process.
  • Assessed current landscape and organized documentation. Worked with Center of Excellence (CoE) to provide the upgrade detail plan with runbook and planned for the parallel upgrade of the dev and UAT instances.
  • Aligned work throughout the implementation, communicating with data source owners, target application owners, as well as the client testing team and client integration team.
