How do I show an employment gap in my resume?

I had to resign my position to care for an ill family member. It was longer than I expected and now I have a gap on my resume.

In the technology field, any gap can be cause for concern. Fortunately, there is actually a fairly easy way to address this issue. First acknowledge the gap and provide a very brief overview. Then describe what you’ve done to get ready for a return to work. For IT professionals, this can be contractor work, studying for and gaining certifications, or attending online courses.

I left my position as an IT consultant to care for an ill family member and I am now ready to return to work. In preparation, I formalized my extensive technical and leadership experience, achieving both security and project certifications. This demonstrates my ability to lead projects and teams and apply best practices – I am excited to once again work with a team to deliver amazing business capabilities.
