Do I really need to send a cover letter?


A lot of companies don’t ask for cover letters. Should I even bother to write one?


If a company asks for a cover letter, you absolutely need to send one. Most recruiters don’t actually read them – they are more likely to be read by the hiring manager. An important thing to remember if that if you have a critical message to include do not limit its inclusion to only your cover letter. Make sure that is in your resume or LinkedIn profile as well.

These days, cover letters are very short and targeted. This means that you can’t send the same letter to every job position.  Think about writing 3-4 versions.
